Prevent Hashtag Abuse Now

I sent them this message for their own good.

Hashtags are an amazing tool on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter to reach out to a wider audience and increase content exposure. I am sure you are familiar with seeing #SomethingLikeThis on these social media sites. Yes, that’s a hashtag.

Although hashtags are often used in good manner, there are times when users abuse hashtags which ultimately builds a bad reputation around their business or personal profile. I’ll give an example..

I frequently search the hashtag #PalmDesert on Twitter because I like to see what’s going on in the area. Usually when I scroll down the #PalmDesert feed I come across a long string of tweets from the same user. These tweets all contain the #PalmDesert hashtag and are posted minutes apart, I’m talking 20-30 tweets.

The reason why this string of tweets appears is because they were posted minutes apart so no other users were able to squeeze in #PalmDesert tweets. As a result this company appears to be spammy and disrespectful to other Twitter users who use #PalmDesert, plus it’s just straight up annoying!

I understand there may be a limited number of hashtags to use to promote your business but I recommend that you keep in mind how frequently you are posting while repeatedly using the same hashtag. Having a string of 2-3 posts is okay but when it goes beyond that your company does not put forth a respectful web presence. I also recommend to give some thought to extra hashtags that relate to your business so you do not repeat the same hashtag.
