Learn Outreach From Lady Gaga

For years I have defined Lady Gaga as the Promotional Wizardress because of her amazing strategies of reaching out to fans (of course her marketing team is behind it too!). On a side note I have been a little monster since “Just Dance” debuted in 2008 and have kept an eye on her projects ever since.

So what can we take note of about Gaga’s outreach methods to connect with our personal projects? Here we go…

#1. She always thanks her fans

Ever since her debut Gaga has gone out of her way to thank her fans and give them credit for her success. This is by far one of the most important aspects of her presentation as it turns the spotlight away from her and onto her fans and lets them feel adored by a goddess which is powerful!

My point: Saying thank you goes a long way.

#2. She publishes raw content

Whether it’s posting selfies or releasing episodes of her Gagavision series, Gaga publishes a lot of raw footage that shows what she is doing behind the scenes. This allows fans to connect with her on a more personal level and see what her life is like outside of the spotlight. Raw footage is more important than ever as social media usage and video viewing has grown to mega popularity. Glossed images are nice but raw footage is real and personal!

My point: Put content out there that lets people see more of YOU.

#3. She is real and consistent

One thing I have noticed about Gaga is that she is fairly consistent in explaining the foundation of her music and performance. I remember watching an interview of her back in 2008 on the Today Show when she just started making major waves in the mainstream industry and much of what she said then is still what she says today: she loves her fans, her music and her artistic display. This consistency allows fans to anchor with her and build strong support over time since her motives are staying in one place rather than shifting.

My point: Be authentic and stick with a sole purpose.

#4. She has promoted common products and platforms

I remember Gaga’s promotion of various products, primarily her Heartbeats
earphones by Dre Beats which were featured in her “Bad Romance” video. Now whenever I see Dre Beats I think of Gaga which is really amazing because they have nothing to do with her directly yet quickly spark my memory of “Bad Romance.” The music video to her song “Telephone” featuring Beyonce is also distinctly memorable as common products such as Miracle Whip and dating site Plenty of Fish were featured. I have to admit the product promotion in “Telephone” was annoying yet I now associate these products with Gaga!

Not to mention she did that interesting stint with Farmville on Facebook for a limited time. I am not a Farmville participant by any means but I did log in just to see Gaga’s awesome themed game.

My point: Cross promote with other entities that compliment you.

#5. She has made unique publicity moves

To be honest I did not watch ‘A Very Gaga Thanksgiving’ (2011) or ‘Lady Gaga and the Muppets’ Holiday Spectacular’ (2013) on TV, both of which aired as ABC Specials, but I have watched bits and pieces on YouTube. These publicity moves make her stand out quite a bit as it’s not every day I hear of a musician hosting a Thanksgiving special. I will always say, “Remember that one time when Lady Gaga hosted her Thanksgiving Special…” Unique publicity moves create memories.

My point: Think of unique methods of promotion.

Those are top of my Gaga promotion list right now. Gaga has always been an impressive musician in my eyes not strictly for her music but also her bold approach in reaching out to her fans. Her promotional strategy can be used by anyone.
