Let’s talk about ideal communication habits. You may say that responding promptly to an email is a no brainer but you cannot believe how many clients have praised me for answering their emails in a timely manner! When I say prompt I mean responding within at least 24 hours. Following up quickly with anyone, whether the relationship is professional or not, will leave a positive lasting impression of you and ultimately build your reputation as someone who is trustworthy and reliable which means you will be successful in your endeavors.
One of my clients explained to me how she had hired multiple virtual assistants over a period of time who were either flakey in responding to her or disappeared altogether. I felt her pain. In fact, a whole string of clients have told me they’ve messaged their web designers and did not hear back from them for at least a week which is FOREVER when something simple needs to be done. Needless to say these clients have never recommended their web designers to me.
Being lax in responding to email, phone calls and other forms of messages is one way to destroy your reputation in no time. Not only will people choose to not do business with you but they may even go out of their way to warn others about you. You do not want this to happen.
I have actually turned away clients in the past due to their slow response to my emails. I’ve learned the hard way that starting off with poor communication in a professional partnership will most likely not lead to better communication as time goes on. I can have high hopes that communication will improve but, from my experiences, it most likely won’t. I am now observant of how potential clients communicate with me so I can determine if they are worth my effort.
Stay abreast in your inboxes and make sure you respond ASAP! This is something very simple to do that will build your reputation and do wonders for you.
