One of the primary goals on both sides of a working relationship is to make sure the relationship lasts long. There is little to be gained when investing time and effort into a working relationship that quickly comes to an end. In my experience it is critical for both partners to explain their communication preferences to prevent confusion and frustration from spurring.
I decided to write a list of communication guidelines to give to my potential clients so we understand my communication preferences from the very beginning. I also encourage them to share their preferred communication habits with me so I know how to work with them. I know sharing these guidelines will save a lot of time in getting work done as well as eliminating unnecessary frustration and misunderstanding.
Here are guidelines I have established..
- Please respond to my email within 48 hours. If you will be longer than that please send me a brief message explaining when you will be able to respond.
- Understand that my goal is to represent your company adequately according to your industry and branding so during initial stages I will most likely be messaging you consistently to go over content and make sure it represents your business. Please do not become hostile if I have misunderstanding, just correct me and I will take note.
- Do not hesitate to give me feedback on my performance. Alert me if you prefer me to do something differently – the earlier you let me know the better. You can also let me know if you like my approach to a particular task so I take note to continue performing that way.
- This is not mandatory but is helpful in building a strong working relationship.. Say positive words when possible such as thank you, great job, etc. I will do the same for you.
